CBD & Fitness Recovery
Updated: Apr 19, 2021
If you’re into fitness, you might have heard the acronym CBD being thrown around the gym or seen it listed as an ingredient on products when you’re shopping for supplements. While cannabidiol, or CBD, is a compound found in cannabis, it does not produce an intoxicating effect. In fact, CBD can provide some mental and physical benefits that may make it a great alternative to drugs and other supplements that often offer a number of side effects. If you’re looking to get more out of your workouts, you might want to consider giving CBD products a try. Here’s why:
CBD may help with pain and inflammation

The use of cannabis for pain management goes back many years. According to the International Sports Sciences Association’s website, CBD can help people who work out by minimizing both inflammation and pain after exercising. If you’re serious about staying in shape, you are likely no stranger to pain and inflammation. Pain can sometimes hinder your performance at the gym, so taking a supplement that can reduce that sensation may benefit athletic performance. In an article on the benefits of using CBD for fitness, a writer for The Cannifornian explains that “CBD can regulate the sensation of pain and inflammation by engaging with the cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system.”
CBD may help you get the right amount of sleep
Have you ever tried to work out after a lousy night’s sleep? If so, you probably remember that the experience was not quite as effective as your other workout sessions. When you’re physically and mentally tired, you might not be able to push yourself as hard as you’d like to while you train. Exhaustion can also be unsafe depending on the type of exercise you are doing. This is because proper sleep is essential for a healthy workout routine.
While there is still research to be done on the subject, there is some promising evidence that CBD may help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep. In one 2019 study published in The Permanente Journal, 72 adults who were presenting with concerns of either anxiety or poor sleep were given CBD after dinner. After the first month, sleep scores improved in 66.7% of the patients. Check out our article Can CBD Help With Sleep? For more information on how CBD affects sleep.

CBD may help with anxiety
This can be a great benefit for competitive athletes. Experiencing anxiety during a competition can hinder your performance as it may affect your ability to focus. In their article on the benefits of CBD for fitness, a writer for The Cannifornian also states that CBD interacts “with the Adenosine and Serotonin receptors in your endocannabinoid system.” This interaction may alleviate stress. In fact, in the study mentioned above, anxiety scores decreased in 79.2% of patients in the first month of taking CBD.
